Luxor & Aswan: The Nile Valley
Temples, tombs and the river between them: five days in Upper Egypt.
25.69° N · Upper Egypt
Ancient Thebes: temples on one bank, royal tombs on the other.
The place
Karnak and Luxor temples on the East Bank; the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple on the West Bank.
Luxor stands on the site of ancient Thebes, capital of Egypt at the height of its power. Temples line the East Bank; across the river lie the tombs and memorial temples of the pharaohs.
Two or three days lets you see the essentials without rushing, with a sunrise balloon flight if the weather allows.
Highlights
A vast complex of temples, pylons and the great hypostyle hall.
Especially beautiful when lit in the evening.
Painted royal tombs cut deep into the hills.
The terraced temple of Egypt’s great female pharaoh.
The West Bank from the air, weather permitting.
